"Free Surfaces" in CATIA V4

Could someone tell me what is considered to be a free surface or free curve or free point in CATIA. I've never seen that name for any features...

Thanks for any hints on what it might be.

I've never heard that term before, so I guessing that it means it's isolated - it's no longer linked to it's parent geometry.
 
I actually thought that it meant FreeForm... (in V4, NET surfaces)
