My first time post and I need the weld spec for stainless to carbon. I'm the mechanical superintendent for a water/waste water company. The process we are using is
GTAW with 309 filler. The engineering firm who supports us
stated they have never seen this done. I am aware this is the proper procedure, I would just like the procedure in hand to better present my case. Any help would be appreciated. My e-mail is dharper10@cox.net.
Thank you

Dennis,
See my post in Thread725-107465 "Welding Stainless Steel 316 to Carbon Steel." I posted a procedure for P-1 to P-8 with GTAW.

I need to find a spec for welding 316SS to Carbon steel on a steam service, temp in excess of 850 deg. f. This is mainly for Instrument connections from condensate pots.

Thanks,

Hugh

Above 650 Deg. F it is adviced to use ERNiCr-3 filler type for this weld.

Hughf,

You may use filler as ijzer's comment. However, please also consider the application of carbon steel at such service temperature.

If it is butt joint welding , it is better to complete weld with ER NiCr-3

ER NiCr3 would do the job very well. However, in case a large number of joints are to be welded, economics must also be considered. ER 309Mo/ E309Mo is a good option.

If you want to know more informaion about suitable filer metal for welding of carbon steel to stainlees steel you can find that in ASME secII part 2C there for you should be specifed the type of carbon steel but i think in that temprature(850 deg) must be used alloy steel but about carbon steel to stainles steel(316) you can find in SFA NO 5.4 (E309Mo) for SMAW welding & IN SFA NO. 5.9(ER 309Mo) for GTAW welding.
