My friend and I were discussing internal combustion engines and we spoke of different materials used to manufacture engine blocks. He mentioned silicon nitride and the associated advantages of the material. Out of curiosity, I'm trying to do some research on synthesizing silicon nitride and the pros and cons of manufacturing engine blocks with silicon nitride, especially since I don't know much about composites and ceramics. Any information or links on this subject is appreciated.

There is an old Army project the "adiabatic diesel". Yes, no cooling.
It was passed around to all of the engine guys over the years.
The could make engines that started and ran. But getting them to restart after they were stopped was another issue.
They did a lot of advanced materials work on this project.
