Pump Cavitation 2

Could a short pipe length on the suction of an end suction pump cause it to cavitate? Would a suction diffuser help this condition if so?

I'm with Johnny Pellin re the strainer, unless there is a very good reason to have a strainer in the line, other than it was specified in the design, I would return it to the store - from there is won't case any further problems.
