Hi,
I have an assembly model in Solid Edge which I want to export to a .step file.
How can I export such to .step such that when someone opens it in Solid Edge they can only view the model as a whole, and not be able to select individual parts?

Thanks

If it's not a big assembly you could do Insert > PartCopy of it into a part file, then STEP that.
I'm not 100% sure if it will work but it's worth a try.

That worked like a charm! Thank you very much

Well it worked so thats cool however...

For complex geometry if often wont work, so you can't always rely on it. Also when a colleague & I took this up with then UGS they discouraged it.

However, I've used it to my advantage before.

KENAT,

Have you reminded yourself of faq731-376 recently, or taken a look at posting policies:

Yeah, on some assemblies it does not seem to work..
Did you ask UGS of an alternative way of doing it?

Problems are usually caused by assembly conditions such as edge-to-edge and edge-to-face coincidence.
If you avoid these you should be OK.
Bringing the assembly into a weldment might be another option.

We spent a bunch of time on this a while back and I don't recall coming up with a really good 100% solution. I don't recall UGS/Siemans coming up with directly equivalent either.

Another way to the same end can be to create a simplified assembly that you then save as a part but you still face the same fundamental problems.
