Hey fellas,

I'm trying to qualify a new corrosion resistance overlay procedure per QW-453. I will be doing it on 1" plate in the 1G position with the GTAW process.

My question is, will an individual whom is certified to weld with GTAW in 6G be able to use this procedure to weld in all positions, as long as he stays within the other essential variables?

I agree to your statement as stated.

However the welder that qualifies (welds) the new corrosion resistance overlay procedure on the 1" plate in the 1G (Flat) position will only be qualified to production weld same in ONLY the 1G (Flat) position.

If same welder wishes to weld in all positions that welder will need to take a 6G position performance qualification test to that procedure.

For your plate qualification in the flat, you will be limited to flat only position per your welding procedure. See QW-256.1 and QW405.4. Position is an essential variable.

If your welder was qualified for corrosion resistant overlays in the 6G position, he can weld overlays in any position that the overlay procedure is qualified to be welded in. See QW-380. However, he will only be able to weld your procedure in the flat position since you are qualifying it in the flat position. (I was assuming you meant your welder was qualified for overlays and not just for groove welds. If he was qualified for groove welds only, then he is not qualified to weld overlays).

Thanks for the replies.

It looks like I'm going to qualify this WPS in the 6G position. QW_453 note 1 states "the pipe lenght shall be a minimum of 6", and a minimum diameter to allow the required number of test specimens".

What is the minimum diameter I can use?

The base material thickness of material being welded is 1.4". Should I use 3/4" thick pipe but what diameter?

Jrupert24 is correct...

M3brunof, your minimum diameter will need to be large enough to obtain 4 guided side bends, either 2 test specimens parallel and 2 spcimens perpendicular to the direction of the welding, or 4 specimens perpendicular to the direction of welding. Before removal, PT is required. Also chem analysis specimens may be required if you spec chem comp in the WPS.

If you use 3/4" thk pipe, you qualify it for 3/4" to unlimited.

Hope this helps....

QW-405.4(c) applies. Qualification on plate in the 3G up position qualifies the WPS for allpositions.

Qualification on pipe in the 5G or 6G positions with at least one vertical segment in the uphill progression qualify all positions.
