I must have some prism tests done at our test lab which falls outside my normal area of concrete repair. In order to calculate the load, I require the cross-sectional area (mortar face) of a hollow concrete block. I cannot find anything in the standards (CSA) that describe how this is done. I was going to have the density done on a block then calculate the width since all the other variables will be known. Any information would be appreciated.

Why can't you just get a block and measure it ????

The procedure you require is in ASTM C 140-02a and can be obtained from in PDF format for $35.00 (US)

Additional information can be obtained from the National Concrete Masonry Institute (NCMA) in Herndon, VA (USA)
Hope this helps.

CSA (Canadian?) if so... then the Ontario Concrete Block Association, as well as others, have published tables showing the minimum geometry. The minimum face shell for 150 blocks is 26mm, for 200mm blocks is 32mm, for 250 blocks is 35mm, and for 300 blocks is 38mm. These conform to the CSA standard and should be minimum, actual manufacture may be greater.
