Pressure Equipment Directive 3

How can I find out if the European Pressure Equipment Directive complies or is superior to the commonly used ASME B31.3 code for process piping ?
Any info ?

The only help I can offer you is where to get a copy of the guidance notes on the PED. These notes have been produced by the department of trade and industry in the UK.

Try calling the National Board in Columbus, Ohio. They're a swell bunch of people. Some of those guys sit on the piping and pressure vessel code committees. I think they have jurisdiction anyway (if you're in the US), and I've heard their seminar instructors tell stories about dealing with European codes. I'd bet a paycheck that they've been asked this question more than a few times.

The PED is not a code, it is a law.
The PED requires certain Essential Safety Requirements (ESR's)are met.
It is possible to use any code or no code and still comply with the PED.

B31.3 by itself will not satisfy all the PED ESR's, but it is a good starting point.

PED is legislation : a kind of general articles and requirements concerning the european market, it contains some technical requirements but not enough to compare it to ASME B31.3. All recognized methods are acceptable by the PED including ASME B31.3. We had marked CE products done according to B31.3 and met the PED. You had only to conform to the requirements of the directive particularly Annex I (Essential Safety Requirements where they speak about material, design, manufacturing, control and inspection). The corresponding EN standard to B31.3 is EN13480 (Industrial piping) that are not yet adopted.
