I would like to know how to plot with the existing topo grayed out and the proposed in dark colors. Do I have to have the existing in a reference file? Thanks for ny help. Glenn

I didnt mention before but I am plotting in black and white.

It makes it easier to have your existing data as an xref. You can then set the symbology to a color that plots grey. Usually 8 or 252.
