attached is a sketch showing a gap in a platform grating with relative movement...one side could be grating or chk pl
is there any standard item available to span this gap and allow for the differntial movement or any ideas on how to detail it...
thanks

I wouldn't be overly concerned about a 1" gap... approx the same as the grating gap. and shouldn't be a tripping hazard... assuming things are secured and not able to fall 'off'...

It looks like a three inch gap with one inch of movement. There are ways to handle this but they depend on actual circumstances. If they are both grating, if the grating spans in and out of the paper or parallel to it. Another way might be to connect to the supports. obviously, the solution depends on what exists now.

both cases...spaning chk pl to grating and another case of spaning grating to grating
new design...grating could span either way..
thanks

Sorry... my error... just saw the 1"... I'd probably secure a strip of checkerplate to the one edge... using bevel headed self drilling and tapping screws to the supporting steel...

Can you lap (by staggering) the bearing bars of the grating so that you allow the movement but don't have the gap?

JL..that's an interesting idea for horizontal movement and I may try to use it, but I am stil stuck with the 1/4" vert. movement..

Each of the possible combinations you mentioned has a different solution. If they are grating end to end you could add a bar under each of the ends, no need to weld, bend some top hat brackets. lay a short piece of grating across the gap and it will ride up and down as well as horizontal.
