hi i am a bit confused about the plate load test, if i am correct the Benkelman plate load test is used to evaluate the strength of pavements , but what about the plate with three dial gauge version , what is it for ?
I have used Benkelman Beam test once. In my experience it is used to test the deflection of the final road pavement (i.e. asphalt level).
Plate load tests (i.e round plates in the range of 300mm plus) are used to test the "strength" and stiffness of the underlying subbase and subgrade. You can determine a CBR value and Young's Modulus.
I have never heard of a plate load test being undertaken on the final asphalt layer. They could be but I havent seen them.
Well the benkelman beam can be used for subbase and subgrade , I've seen it and you can check it out on youtube . Only the British and french standard use the version with the three dial gauge around the perimeter of the plate whilst the German standard uses exclusively the Benkelman beam.
