For the lab results, if the limits determines something is clay (Atterberg), but the clay content is much less than the silt (Hydrometers), would it be clay or silt?
The A line decides, dont go into looking at make up of clay and silt individually, look at the fines content (i.e. sum of both). For fine grained soils, anything above 50% in US and 35% in UK is a fine grained soil
there can be exceptions but thats a good base to start from
If the Atterberg Limits show plasticity typical of clay, the soil is classified as clay, even if hydrometer results show more silt-sized particles. That's because classification focuses more on behavior (plasticity) than just particle size.
