Plate buckling and steel strength

Folks,
Why is the plate buckling strength based on the inverse of sqrt(Fy), meaning why is the a thicker plate needed if I am using 50 Ksi versus 36 Ksi.

The plate thickness before buckling becomes a problem is larger for a higher grade steel, by my code (AS4100).

It's likely that you are not using the same code, but I'm sure the same principles apply.
 
Read section 6.16 of Salmon and Johnson (4th ed).
 
Read WillisV's ref (on 2nd Ed), let me try to test my understanding by lay it out using plane language, please correct me for omissions and mistakes.

The Euler buckling unit stress is a function of b/t, E and poison ratio, but independent of yield stress. The phenomenon, that larger t is required for higher grade plate in concern of buckling, is due to AISC's intention to ensure buckling will not occur prior to reach full yield strength, and is the result of equating Fcr >= Fy.
