Placement of valves (horizontal or vertical) with regards to handling.

Hi all,

I would like to know the criteria for placing valves in horizontal or vertical based on the size for ease of handling and maintenance.
As I understand and follow, I try to keep valves 10" and above in horizontal only for ease of handling.
Can anybody throw some light on this topic?

As far as I am aware there is no criteria unless specified within a particular company standard. I see a lot of configurations with valves in vertical piping with no apparent consideration of how to remove for maintenance purposes if required and is a common comment during 3D Model Reviews particularly from Client Maintenance representative. If possible valves that cannot be manhandled should be in horizontal and if not practical contractor should demonstrate how to safely remove. I would also add that for control valve configurations in horizontal bypass should not be directly above but offset to allow access for valve removal.
