"Piping Materials Guide"
by Peter Smith
1st Edition, 2005

The back cover calls it "the only book of its kind on the market." Well..., I was not impressed, though.
Ever since I have read the book open-eyed for the first time I have wanted start a thread compiling the surprisingly high number of flaws and errors you will find inside. So let's have a go:

Page 56 (Chemical Requirements):
'A19M' should read 'A 194M.'

Page 59 (Mechanical Requirements):
'ASTM A 202 / A 202M' should read 'ASTM A 203[\b] / A 203M.'

Page 76:
"Their compositions are given in the following table."
No such table can be found inside the book

Page 93 (Mechanical Requirements):
'ASTM A 515 / A 515M' should read 'ASTM A 516 / A 516M.'

Page 109 (Mechanical Requirements):
'ASTM A 164' should read 'ASTM B 164'.

Page 113 (Scope):
'Rods 5/16–1/3 in. (7.94–19.05 mm), inclusive, in diameter' should be '3/4' and 'exclusive'

Page 124 (Mechanical Requirements):
'ASTM A 564' should read 'ASTM B 564'.

Page 126 (Scope):
'Rods 5/16–3/4 in. (7.94–19.05 mm), inclusive, in diameter' should be 'exclusive'

Page 127 (Mechanical Requirements):
'ASTM A 573' should read 'ASTM B 573'.

Page 127 (Scope):
'Rods 5/16–3/4 in. (7.94–19.05 mm), inclusive, in diameter' should be 'exclusive'

Page 128 (Mechanical Requirements):
'ASTM A 574' should read 'ASTM B 574'.

Page 130 (Mechanical Requirements):
'ASTM A 672' should read 'ASTM B 672'.

Page 131:
"The term piping component is interchangeable with piping fitting"
This definition appears to be in contradiction to MSS-SP-96 Terminology of Valves and Fittings

Page 139/(140):
The description of 'Visual Inspection' refers to a Figure 4.14. The actual Figure 4.14 on page 141, however, belongs to the next chapter on seamless pipes and is referred to in section 'Cast Round Billets' on Page 141.
Furthermore Figure 4.12 gives a misleading impression of the removal process for surface defects. Let's assume this illustration was supposed to be Figure 4.13 showing the 'Adding of the End Finish', and the illustration labelled Figure 4.13 was meant to be Figure 4.14, referred to on page 139. Which, of course, leaves us with two Figures 4.14.

Page 146:
The data in the table is taken from ASME B16.10, not ASME B16.19

Page 149:
The OD of NPS 3" pipe is not 0.083 mm, but 88.9 mm.

Page 149:
The metric equivalent to NPS 3" is not DN 75 mm, but DN 80 mm

Page 169:
The OD of NPS 3" pipe is not 0.083 mm, but 88.9 mm.

Page 169:

Page 174
"Piping systems ... may be subjected to 100% NDE, which means that all valves are X-rayed. This NDE takes place before the hydrostatic testing..."
Replace 'valves' by 'welds'. Otherwise this definition of 100% NDE would need some more explanatory words

Page 181/182:
Both pages contain a figure labelled Figure 5.1 each.
By the way, neither of both figures is really convincing.

Page 183:
"Shielded metal arc welding (SMAW). This process requires striking an arc between a consumable metal rod (electrode) and the parent metal, which is the workpiece and the two pieces of metal to be welded."
Replace 'and' by 'or', or 'i.e.'. Alternatively replace 'two pieces' by 'second piece'

Page 187:
The benefits of MIG are: "2. Faster than MIG, 3. Less operator skill required than MIG"
So this welding process is be even faster and easier than itself...

Page 189:
Liquid Penetrant Examination
The process decription of LPE is incomplete and does not even mention the use of developing agents

Page 197:
"The relevant codes are ASME 150 lb and 300 lb."
I dislike this sloppy use of the word ASME code

Page 203:
"Stud bolts are three-component bolts that combine a stud bolt with a thread along the length of the stud and two nuts with matching internal thread through the length external thread and two nuts with matching internal threads."
Was this description helpful to you, and how many nuts are there?

Page 237 (Globe valves, Product Range):
"...the gate valve can be supplied..." should read 'globe valve'.
This section apparently was written using a copy & paste technique

Page 237 (Globe valves, Product Range):
" ... from 3/8 to 24 in. with a pressure seal... " should be "from 2 to 24 in."

Page 240 (Check valves):
"...this manufacturer can supply the gate valve." should read '(swing) check valve'.

Back cover:
"inspections for OSHA regulations"
On which page inside the book can I possibly find this information and why is there no further occurance of the word 'OSHA' inside the book?

Please feel free to add your ideas to this list.

thanks . . .

perhaps the author should be given this list and an opportunity to issue errata (?). perhaps the author has a matter to review with publisher as well . . .

grandnobi;
Errata aside, what was the gist of the book? Just a bunch of ASTM references to material specifications? Did the book provide recommendations on use, limitations, specific pitfalls related to service conditions?
