Dear All,
Please help me to clear a situation i am facing with my client,
I am a supplier of line pipes and my contract for supplying pipes beveled according to ANSI B16.25 while the producing mill have surprised me that their availability to produce pipes with beveled ends per API 5L,
(pipes are 21km 8" sch. 80 ERW),
So, please advise me about the differences (technically) between the two types of beveling and both of their preferable cases of applications.

B16.25 requires bevel angle to be 37.5 degrees (+/- 2.5 deg)
API 5L requires bevel 30 degrees (+ 5 / - 0 deg)
The greater angle of bevel will require more weld metal and therefore more time / cost

My sincere appreciation to your kind response/efforts,
While if using B16.25 is a waste of weld metal/time/cost, what are the advantageous gain by using B16.25 which insisted to be used by my client, how i can convince him using well known codes that API should be prevails as it is the most suitable code to be used.

To convince your client is to run production weld test for 37.5 and 30 degree, at least 3 specimens each type of bevel. The test won't cost much. If your client still won't buy it, you just bite the bullet, no more argurement.
If you look at B31.3 code, the bevel angle is also 37.5 degree. However, I was told by many people that as long as you can get root pass done, no differencde between the two. I deal with lots of large diameter welded duct, from 50" to more than 100" with 60 psig, 5/8" thick wall and I have been used 30 degree bevel for years.
 
Tell him that he ordered API 5L, which has the 30deg std and give him a clearly higher price option for producing the not to standard 37.5 deg bevel, explaining that it will take you more time to cut that extra material off. Be sure to tell him that it will be cut off only so that he can pay more again while the contractor welds it back in the field.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. If it's not safe ... make it that way.
 
Standard fitting such as elbows and flanges to ASME B16.9 and B16.5 respectively will be produced with bevels to match ASME B16.25. This may be his only concern. Ultimately it doesn't affect the strength of the weld.
