We've encountered an alarming rate of pinholes in our clad work lately. Trying to nail down the problem. Argon tested good and no leaks. We are welding on 4130 under a WPS that we've used for many years. I'm beginning to think the defects may be caused by the consumable. We are using Arcos brand filler. I've noticed quite a bit of black oxide-like material in the weld puddle. You can see little chunks of it run through the puddle as the weld progresses, and it gets worse as more weld is layered (ring grooves). Our lead welding engineer says this is normal, but I'm hesitant to agree with him on this.

Any ideas on what I could be missing?

Switch to another supplier of your weld wire.
