hi everyone,
please help me in finding the displacements due to the application of voltage on piezo layer.
the lay up consists of two piezo layers- one at top and the other at bottom.in between graphite/epoxy layer.
which element should i consider in ansys. can anyone guide me step by step procedure as iam new to it.

I believe the elements you want to use would be either SOLID5,SOLID98, or PLANE13. These elements have voltage and displacement degrees of freedom. For the graphite/epoxy layers use whatever structural elements you would normally use. For the piezoelectric elements you need to define the material matrix using a data table. I beleive that the piezo elements can be driven with a voltage or a current. I would suggest that you consult the element reference library for more information.

hi spongebob007,
thanks for ur valuable suggestion. i tried solid 5 for piezoelectric layer and solid 45 for graphite/epoxy layer. iam not getting the exact results which i want. what i made is as follows:
1.given preferences-structural,electric
2.added elements solid5 and solid45
3. given material properties for both elements,
4.in section i considered shell and gave three layers, mat no, thickness, orientations
5. in modelling i created the required volumes.
6.then i glued the three volumes.
7 meshed total volume.
8. applied constraints and applied electrical load of 100 volts on top piezo layer
but iam getting a deflection value of around 0.08e-18 please have a look at the attachment and suggest me whether my approch is right or not.

I can't open the file you attached. It's been a while since I have done this so I don't remember all the details. You might want to try applying a load of 0 volts on the bottom of the piezo layer. You might also want to take a look at how you input the values of the piezoelectric matrix for the solid5 elements.

how can i apply load in the form of (10 sin pi x/a sin pi y/b) in the static analysis in ansys, where a & b are dimensions of plate, x=a/2,y=b/2

can anybody tell me how to model piezoelectric plate in ansys? the plate consists of two layers and it is simply supported. which element should i consider? i need to find nodal deflections under the application of voltage
