Perpendicular midsurface connections

How do I connect two perpendicular midsurface shell elements (stiffened plate) together? I dont have a surface to sellect on the stiffeners because they are drawn as one part, connected with the plate. I am trying to compare the differences between using a shell element and a beam element.
