I'm working on the fire protection portion of a large Virginia project. I'm not a big proponent of preparing P & ID's for fire protection because other than possibly being visual tools, there is not much value to the fire protection engineer or designer doing the detailed design - especially for sprinkler system work. Another fire protection engineer, now retired, stamped fire protection P & ID's on a previous job for the same client, which were a collaboration of this fire protection engineer and a process engineering specialist (non PE). The Virginia engineering board laws/regulations and Virginia regulation 18 VAC 10-20-760 is not clear about whether or not P&ID's have to be stamped. It just says just says final drawings must be stamped. Does anyone know of another section in Virginia law that covers this?

Also, is there a regulation or law in Virginia that specifically states which discipline drawings and specs are actually required to be stamped - plumbing, fire protection, HVAC, fire alarm, utilities, etc?

Thanks,

Fpeng1

You need to contact the State Board of Engineers for this interpretation. This is an issue of licensing, and it varies by state and providence in North America.
