Hi

I get alot of automotive parts to mold and alot of these parts have flaws or holes that won't alow them to become solids. I have done surface molds but find them very difficult. I use solidworks and like solids it makes nice molds. What is the best software to patch these part files and what is the best method.

Regards and thanks
Rick

HI RICK
I AM A FREELANCE MOULD TOOL DESIGNER AND FIND THAT DATA INTERFACE BEYWEEN VARIOUS 3D MODELLING SYSTEMS IS A PROBLEM THAT PLAGUES US ALL.
TO OVERCOME THIS I STARTED USING WORK NC CAD WHICH IS A SURFACE MODELING PACKAGE SPECIFICALLLY FOR TOOL DESIGN AND MOULDMAKERS ,AND NOW I NO LONGER RUN INTO THE

YOUR PROBLEM CAN BE RESOLVED BY ENSURING THAT THE PARENT SYSTEM IGES OUTPUT IS CONFIGURED TO SUIT SOLIDWORKS OR TRY USING :STEP: FILES

I understand that but what I was asking was is there something better than what I use. I am using Solidworks and Cadkey. I know how to do it quite well in Cadkey and then import it into solidworks and Knit it. But I know there are other types of programs that may do this easyer. I have heard cymatron is good to use for this. I note that most of the problems I am getting are coming mostly from Catia. Crossed edge surfaces or surfaces that are compleatly untrimed or so flawed they can only be deleated and replaced.

Is there any other software that whould help to fix some of these easily? Yours is called NC Cad?

Thanks Rick

Hello,
I had in the past the same problems as you have. When I start using Think3 software I resolved almost all of my problems.
Think3 is hybrid software which allows you to work in solid and free-form as well. It consider open manifold as a solid and shows you where the open edges are, it can fix automaticly or in some cases you have to do it manually, but creating surfaces is extrimely easy and user friendly.
If you need ant other help let me know.
