Why wouldn't it be allowed? Is there a certain requirement you are looking at? There is no specific requirement against 6" units in the code that I am aware of, but what may be the limiting factor is the size of the bar that can be used. For a 6" wall that is often a #6 bar which may not satisfy your design forces.
