P2M files; appearance won't 'stick' to surface or body

I found a new batch of p2m materials appearance files. When I try to drag a 'simple' (eg. a colour) appearance onto my part it works fine, but it does not work for a more complex multi-coloured textured appearance, despite it's looking right in the thumbnail. Is it something to do with the part properties?
