P 4130 A519 designation

I reviewing a WPS that list the Materials as a P number 4130 grade A519 , this WPS states it was prepared in accordance with ASME IX , I don't see any P number 4130 , only reference I can find is A519 which has S number of 1 , this is for welding tube shapes , any help

You are correct, 4130 does not have an assigned P-No in accordance with ASME B&PV Code, Section IX. The alloy UNS should be listed on the WPS, under Type or Grade.
 
I am researching this material, 4130 A514, for a client of mine and noted it to be a S-No. 11B. I am trying to determine all the pqr/wps requirements (ie.... Preheat, intrepid temps and if PWHT is required.

Any advice is appreciated.
 
Requirements for welding are usually provided by the application of the part, and if there are any design codes or standards. Since you provided no information regarding this background, I would suggest using ASME Section IX for development of a welding procedure and weld qualification record. This should at least get you started in the right direction.

A 514 contains various grades of high yeid strength low alloy steel - you specified no grade. 4130 is weldable provided you use sufficient preheat - 350 deg F. The interpass and PWHT will depend on the grade of A 514 you are joining and heat treatment.

Better think about post weld nondestructive testing as well.

The grade we do not know, our client is trying to find this information out for us. All I know is that the materials being joined are a 1" baseplate and a 3/4" leg so this is a structural application. I know by looking in ASME Sect IX that the grades can only be A, B, E, F or Q based on the material thickness.

Client is wanting to use the GMAW process with a LA80 or LA90 wire.

No problem. The interpass temperature will need to be selected based on the Grade of A 514. As far as PWHT requirements, you will need to carefully consider specified heat treatment condition of the 4130 and the heat treatment condition of the A 514 steel grade. In some cases, PWHT is not recommended because it can alter the base metal properties adjacent to the HAZ.

If the A 514 material is provided as quenched and tempered, your selection of PWHT will need to be 50-100 deg F lower than the original specified tempering temperature.

If the 4130 is not supplied nor required to be in a heat treated condition, you may elect to butter the 4130, locally PWHT and complete the weld joint to the A 514 steel with no PWHT.
 
I have been conversating with our client and getting bits and pieces of information as they get it. The material originally started out as a 4130 but is now said to be A514 material. Are 4130 and A514 different materials? I am not familiar with 4130 and have been trying to find information out about it.

I am having the prints sent to me but from what I have been told the only material designated on the prints is A514. If you dont mind, once I get all of the data that I have requested I will post the info here and what I think is required and maybe you can review it and let me know what you think.

4130 and A 514 are different species of the same animal. See below regarding 4130


The ASTM A 514 grades are supplied as quenched and tempered alloy steel plates. There is less carbon content in mass percent by specification in comparison to 4130. However, the lower carbon content is offset by other alloying elements (which I call spices) for the A 514 Grades to achieve the high-yield strength for structural purposes. So, welding of these Grades can be without PWHT, as I mmentioned in the previous post.
