Anyone versed in blast design for military projects? I am looking for guidance in checking an OWSJ. The joist manufacturers don't give you top and bottom chord sizes, but I need them to check the joist for inelastic rotations and dynamic load carrying capacities.

Thanks for any help

Look on page 1479 of UFC 3-340-02. This gives guidance for OWSJ. I think the olsd TM-1300 has sample calculations

I am following that example, but the problem is that the angle sizes for the OWSJ are not known, and the manufacturer just wants loads for the joists, they won't tell you the exact size of the chords. How do I detail connections, and check for dynamic loads without knowing the actual chord sizes?

Thanks again

Just some thoughts

You could call a joist manufacturer and explain your situation and see if they will give you a size of a chord. Then you could use that size in your analysis and spec the chord size on your drawings just in case a different joist manufacturer is used. (I would assume using a larger chord size would only make your situation better).

Or you could guess at the chord size and run the calculations and then spec the chord size you used on your drawings as the minimum usable chord. This many not be a bright idea.
