What is the optimum root opening, for complete penetration weld, in a single pass, one side only for the material and joint described below?
Weld process is GTAW, 3/32 tungsten, 2% thor.

Titanium 6Al 4V, 0.100” thick
Single V butt joint, 60 Deg included angle with 0.025 root face.

Also, please direct me to any formulas that apply for determining root opening.

Thank you,
Dave

The Metals Handbook Eighth Edition vol. 6 gives in Table 1 at page 376 that for Titanium base metal thickness of
0.031 to 0.125", root opening should be between 0-0.10t (t=thickness) with square groove butt joint (no bevel).

Thank you for the replies.

I am using the 0.0-0.1t for the root opening.
Welding 0.100” thick 6-4 Ti ,I am having difficulty achieving complete penetration the length of the plate.
I am running at 200 to 230 amps: Utilizing an inert atmosphere glove-box

My usual Ti welding is from 0.005” to 0.070”, welds within this range are just fine.
The 0.100” thick Ti is presenting a bit of a problem.

Any suggestions?

Have you looked at increasing the diameter of the weld wire for the slightly thicker base metal or adjusting your electrode travel speed and or wire feed rate ?
