I need one of the senior gear people to verify something for me.
That the older model (1960-1970's) Manual Fellow's Gear Shapers didn't have any seal on any shafts in the machine. The shafts penetrated the machine frame.
The lubricating oil was allowed to flow freely around the shafts and run into small catch basins on the side of the machine that drained back to the oil sump.

Just because I'm attempting to answer this, should not in any way suggest that I'm "senior".
We have both a Fellows 6A & 6 – 36. You are correct, neither of these machines carry oil seals on any shafting and both use a scavenging type lube system.

Thanks to a very knowledgeable experienced gearcutter I now have confirmation to back up a statement I had made recently.

I had made the suggestion of using such a system on a machine with some local lubrication problems and no room except for a blind sleeve bearing. The machine oscillates in a manner similar to a gear shaper.
Needless to say I wasn't taken very seriously since no one would put out a machine with oil running down the sides.
