The company I work for has had an ABB robot for 2 years and is just now setting it up for production. My job is to make the robot do what our welders are currently doing. The only problem is that I can't get a 5/8" weld to work out. I was wondering if anyone has suggestions on gas, voltage, weave size and type, wire feed, travel speed, dwell, or any other data that would come in handy.

We are welding 1018 and 1025 bars along with A36 plate.

As unclesyd noted in his response can you give more information -
1)what are you fabricating,
2)what position are you trying to weld, downhand, horizontal etc
3)what do you mean by " can't get the 5/8 welds to work out"? are they cracking, are they the wrong shape, are they the wrong size?

Thanks for the direction. We are making large hydraullic stone splitters. Generally we lay the parts at a 45° angle so that the we pour the weld straight into the joint. For our big items we start with a 3/8" root and lay a 5/8" cover pass over the top. As for not getting the weld to work I mean that there is undercutting on one side that is hard to get rid of. When we wire brush the weld the surface doesn't have clearly defined ripples or waves, the edges are defined but the center looks almost pitted. As for the size, the legs are the right length but the crown is to flat. I am simply looking for anyone with a robot welder that uses a weld this big to see if their data will work for us.

Suggest you consult with a qualified Weld Eng. It will save you money in the long run.
