If your seal components include 300 series stainless steels, and especially 316SS, the chlorides from the clorine in the water will attack it, and especially if the flow is stopped, (as in a stand by pump) and the clorinated water is trapped inside the seal.
Do a site search or go to the metallurgy and/or corrosion threads on this forum and you will find lots of info regarding chlorides and SS. Bad combination.
