New Pro/E User (redundant save)

Every time I save a file (Using pro/e 5.0) I look and there is a new version of the file. I don't understand why it doesn't just save it over the original instead of making a copy. The two files with the same name are the part as it was save at the moment it was created.

That's the way Pro E works, every time you hit save, it will save another copy. Each successive file has an increasing numerical suffix. when Pro E loads the part, it will use the highest number part.

There is a batch file called cleanup.bat. Run it in the directory and it will delete all parts except for the one with highest numbered suffix.

You can also use the File>Delete>Old Versions. That is the way I cleanup after/during a project so that I am able to see what I am deleting. Others here use purge.pro which sounds the same as the cleanup but they have on multiple occasions deleted a backup or wanted alternate. Sometimes the newest file is experimental and not the most current. But that is a horrible revision control system I don't follow either. Back to point if you want know visually that the current version is what you desire then you can use the above method. Just don't accidentally select the All Versions option (though it will ask for confirmation).

I use a map key that saves and then deletes the old versions. That only works for the active object so if you are saving drawings or assemblies you will still have multiple part versions if you modified them. There are other utilities that will cleanup all the Pro/E files (it makes a lot of temp files) and let you control how many versions are kept. Sometimes having a few older versions on disk can save your bacon.

BTW, the is a pull down in the file open dialog box that will let you see "all versions" so you can open an older one. Otherwise Pro/E will always get the highest version number.
