need high temp corrosion resistant material 1

I'm looking for a material that will be able to withstand very high temperatures (>1200 C) for periods of about 2 minutes.

The material is needed as a heat shield for a stainless steel fume hood that collects the fume created by pouring molten steel into a furnace. Because it will be in a fume hood, the material must also be immune to chemical attack.

We currently use 3/4" cast iron plates, but they are being melted and/or corroded away.

Price is a consideration since the area to be covered is quite large (approximately 125 square feet)

I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Why not try low carbon steel plates--much higher melting point than CI.
 
Try ceramic tiles they will be a long term solution to your problem.
 
Metallurgically, you might use Inconel (some grades are better than others.

For better corrosion resistance and heat insulation, you'll want ceramics. The area you want to cover is very large. Can you live with separate tiles or do you require a continuous plate (unadviseable)?


Options may include:

-straight aluminum oxide,
-Lanxide's DIMOX material (if it must be a continuous plate)
-high SiC or alumina refractories (similar to how they are
used in the glass furnace industry (some might be
available in castable form)
-quartz, which can probably take brief excursions over
1200°C and can be made into large sheets, and
-phosphate based composites (I'm not sure if they can take
1200°C but they are low-cost and can be made into large
sheets).
