Hello. I am a civil engineer so I am not too familiar with mechanical engineering topics. I am an need of a motor that has both forward and reverse speeds. I will be using this for lifting a computer monitor up. The monitor probably weighs no more than 20 lbs, but I will probably have a counterweight attached to it. What I am looking for is the amount of HP needed and maybe some websites that offer the motor I am looking for. I don't think this would be a very large motor so I would hope to spend under $50 for it. Also, if this application seems like it wouldn't work, please offer any suggestions. Thanks for your help!!!

Look at the torque and moment arm equations. All rotational forces translate to Force,(needed to lift something), via your system's moment arms. Think winch drum radius and gear radii.

Go to "grainger.com" search motors => specialty => gear drive.

If you know the torque and speed you known you can go to and fill those in and get a list of motors from over 20 manufacturers that will suffice.

(With and without additional reduction).

This will save you lots of time browsing through websites and catalogs.

Nice Motor. Thanks!

I'm struggling with Graingers G A R B A G E search engine right now. Man! Don't these people ever try their own lousy software?
