Need help with a mechanism design

Need help in locating details of a trash can open/close mechanism, ie.. flipping a trash can lid open by stepping on a foot pedal. Actually I need to do the reverse motion, closing the lid(by rotation) by displacing a smaller linear movement. Hope someone can help.

I need a detail diagram of what the mechanism looks like. I am fairly new at this and need to design something similiar. A lid (cover) for a tube like the trash can. The only space I have available is to apply a pulling motion in a linear direction. I hope this is not too confusing. Thanks for the reply.
 
Not knowing exactly what the parts look like makes it difficult to help you. This is basically a kinematics problem. Text help will be limited.
 
THe part look just like the trash can that I have mentioned but much smaller. In fact, I just need the details of the mechanism to see how it works.
 
Let's see if you can follow my ASCII diagram...

Image a triangle (bellcrank) made of BCD, with C being a pivot. There is a verticle member going up from B that pivots... there is a horizontal member from D attached to the Lid with a pivot.

If you apply a force (A) down on the lever connected to B, the bellcrank will rotate about C, making point D rock CCW. This motion would open/close your Lid. There are a zillion combinations of this system that are used in even more applications in almost everything. Playing with the ratios between BCD will give you different mechanical advantages and movements. &quot;Happy the Hare at morning for she is ignorant to the Hunter's waking thoughts.&quot;
