Need help creating cutout in solidworks

Hi,

I started learning solidworks (2007) recently,but having trouble selecting a plane to sketch a cutout on the outside of a cilinder, i think that i need to offset from surface? and than give depth dimensions,(offset from)?

Hi,

the pictures are from SolidEdge. When you try to do that in
SolidWorks then you should post it to that Forum.

Otherwise select Sketch, in the Pulldown select Parallel Plane
click on one of the ReferencePlanes. Right to the Pulldown
a FlyOut (Keypoints) will appear select from it the tangent option.
Now place the plane on the cylinder.
