Try a Combination Square. They are available at any home improvement store. In order to get increased resolution, you may need to replace the blade with one from a Tool & Die supply house.

Starret makes a rule with 0.01" divisions.

You are judged not by what you know, but by what you can do.

Starret may be pricey but they are king of line. When you use such precision equipment don't forget to correct for temperature deviations. Check out the owner's manual when you are to check the reference temperature to which this type of ruler was graduated.

What about a dial indicator on a stand, or an electronic height gage? And, save the surveyors level.

isn't a self-standing ruler a "dictator" ?

"ruler" or "scale" ?? ...

A 6" steel rule with the increments you need and a magnet attached to the base......Cheap and cheerful.
