So far This does not begin to match any commercial alloy.

0.8-0.92 carbon, .6 max Si, .55-.85 Manganese, .05 max P, .06 max S, 1.9-2.3 Chrome, .28-.38 Mo.

Look familiar to anyone?

thanks,

Dan T

Is this composition indicative of the bulk, or was it sampled from the surface only? Perhaps this component has been carburized?

Near about this high carbon, I have made castings that are used as guides in rolling mills. The rolled material is guided through the pathways in the casting. The only requirement is that it should resist modest wear and be cost effective. The grooves are machined in the casting before assembly.

I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." — Thomas Edison
