I am trying to do the following steps

1. Open MS Project
2. Create a task
3. Make the duration as 1 day
4. Go to the right plane
5. Drag the task to make it for 2 days
6. Now the task duration column shows 1.88 rather than 2 days. Why?

Please help.

The only way that happens on my setup is if you have the minimum time scale set for hours and you've actually got 1 day and 7 hours.

When smallest timescale is set to days, the smallest change I can get is 0.5 days
