Our instrument engineer is planning to install a new mooring line monitoring (MLM) system for our existing quick release hook. As a mechanical engineer I just wonder whether the MLM will result the accurate measurement or not due to the condition of the existing hook. This hook has been used for 25 years more. Prior to install the MLM I need to ensure the hook condition, whether it still within the MLM requirement for achieving the accurate measurement or need to be repaired/reconditioned.
The problem is I have no idea to identify the hook parameters to be measured by MLM for monitoring the mooring line tension. All I know is the MLM load cell will be installed in the hook pin. Furthermore,there is no movement can be seen at the hook even the line tension is increased. So, what does exactly the MLM load cell measure in the hook pin..? friction..? or what..?
My concern for asking this question is to concentrate the hook repair to achieve the required MLM load cell parameter.
