Hi everybody,

In a full moment connection, will there be any difference if we weld the flanges of a beam directly to column( Complete joint penetration) instead of having a top & bottom plate welded to beam & column thru fillet weld?

Under what circumstances each method is preferred?

This is not a siesmic design issue.

Thanks

The two are simply different types of moment connections. Given no seismic restrictions, it's a matter of fabricator preference. The AISC Manual gives info for both types of connections. Every fabricator I've worked with prefers the flanges CJP welded to the column rather than flange plates although surely there are some fabricators that prefer the flange plates. The flange welded connection is much easier on the designer also because fewer limit states must be checked.
