Dear All,

I need the Modulus of Elasticity for some calculation. I have some values, but I am in doubt if it can be calculated with the values. The values I have are:

Rm = 1580 MPa
Rp0.2 = 665 MPa
Elongation 55 %

These are the values of stainless steel 316L at -253°C. now I need the E-modulus. In another thread I found E=1580/0.002 but I am doubting if this is correct.

Can anyone help me in finding the right value or calculation method?

thanks in advance.

Robert

55% elongation at -253C?? Seems like you have a data problem.

The 2% offset formula you were given is for normal temperatures. Steel properties are affected by temperature, both low and high, so I doubt the formula holds for your conditions.

The published modulus is
193 x 103 MPa

Thanks Ron,

the values I have received from the stainless steel foundation and they put the source at ASM Specialty Handbook. So I assumend the data was OK.

Do you have any data on this or know where I should try? -253C is a far more then i need and requested, but apparently the only one they had. I need approx -50C, and then the E-module and the yield strength.

Hope you, or anyone else, can tell me where I could find this information.

The value of the elastic modulus above is valid for service temperatures below ambient for 316L stainless steel. You can use the reported yield strength (0.2% offset) for room temperature down to -50 deg C for 316L stainless steel.

Hi Metengr,

Thanks for your quick reply! this is what i needed. I will use your information for my further research.

thanks again.
