Hello;
I'm a chemical engineer, so not very familiar with tribological issues. But a part of my work deals with abrasion accelerated tests.
I have 2 questions :
1/ in an abrasion process, how could I know which mechanism is involved (adhesive wear, abrasion, etc.)
2/ do you have any reference about models of abrasion by cutting or plowing on rough surfaces ?

thanks
greetings Alex

A good general reference on wear is Peterson,M.B.& Winer,W.O.(Eds.),1980, "Wear Control Handbook", ASME Press which should be available in any good technical library. Section 5 on component wear discusses wear mechanisms prevalent in piston rings, bearings, seals, gears,brakes, tools, chain, brushes and others.

The above cited reference has a chapter on "Diagnosis of Wear Mechanisms" which very briefly indicates that adhesion involves material transfer from one surface to another classified as mild or severe (called scuffing). "Abrasion is recognized by presence of clean furrows cut by a hard particle or protuberence" that is proven by finding abrasive particles partially buried at the end of a furrow.
Models (equations) of wear processes including adhesion and abrasion are discussed in a chapter on "Wear Theory and Mechanisms". Other sources of wear case histories are
