It's terrible, but is it an engineering disaster? So far it isn't clear any engineering was at fault. However, I was sent a notice that for under $2000 my gas company will install an automatic shutoff that is triggered if the line to the house gets cut, so maybe it's worth looking at engineering that can avoid contractor errors.

Design of gas lines, valves, etc. is engineering is it not?

Design of a car is engineering... someone running one off of a cliff isn't.

We don't know what happened yet. If it was a failed safety valve, okay... if some struck the pipe with a backhoe and tossed in a lit cigarette, not much to see here.

I guess if you don't think it's an engineering failure... then don't read it.
