Can 1020 steel be cooled too quickly - so that it forms martensite in the weld?

Can I assume that air cooling of a 0.063 Mig weld is always OK?

Is water quenching going to produce martensite in 1020?

1020 can form martensite upon water quenching from the austenitizing temperature.

amorrison4;
You don't mention the thickness of the base metal that you are joining, which really governs cooling rate during welding. Water quenching and rapid cooling rates during and after welding are comparing apples to watermelons.

Given good welding practices, where welding is performed at or above 50 deg F AND base metal thickness less than 3/4", the answer is NO you will not form martensite in the base metal heat affected zone or in the weld deposit.

Clarification.

The 1020 metal thicknesses to be joined are both 0.063 inch .

No, you will not form martensite on air cooling.
