Microstructure analysis

For the brass microstructure, I assume the stripes are lamellar, while for aluminium, I'm not sure if the lines are scratches or grain boundaries.These are the only things I got from the microstructures and was hoping maybe someone could point out something I missed.

All you are seeing are scratches on both.

Please get someone to assist you in preparing a good microstructure sample. There are deep scratches visible. Also, have the phase diagrams of Brass and Aluminium alloy readily in front of you to understand some of the microstructural constituents.

Else,you may come back with a better prepared sample and someone can assist you in understanding the differences.

One big issue with softer metals is how easy it is to smear the surface during polishing and then you end up looking at the smeared metal and not the true structure. You need assistance with sample prep.

50X magnification is almost like looking with the naked eye. 200X to 500X magnification would give you a proper view.
