We actually do metalizing or "spray welding". It is used quite extensively in machine repair. Building up worn surfaces and finish machining. We spray steel and bronze and if done correctly is a very cost effective way to save parts rather than starting over. All of our spray welding is done shafts or cylindrical parts. Not usually built up more than a 1/16" or so.
In aviation we call it FlameSpray. Oxy-acetylene application of 1100 Aluminum on Fiberglass parts for Lightning strike protection and sprayed on antenna surface.
