Does anyone know of a quick way to measure bearing diameters on a shaft while it is still in centers on a grinding machine? To add a little complexity, the ranges of the OD of the journal can range from 1.5" to 4.5" with numerous sizes in between. The tolerance on these bearing journals is +/- .0002".

We currently use something called "air-snaps", but we cannot seem to get the quality that we need. We have asked several laser companies if they have anything, but they do not seem to have either the size capabality or tolerance capability.

thanks

In process contact gaging will work. Its been many years but the gage of choice back then was Marposs.

We had good success in controlling tight tolerances (+/- 0.0002") with Marposs gage. Dont remember if it could be easily modified for different diameters.
