I am having difficulty determining the cooling rate of the following application:
600 lbs of 1/4" x 4" steel pins (approx 7100 pins)
Cooling medium: Nitrogen at 15 psig
Gas recirculation at 5000 CFM
Initial load (pins) temp: 2000 deg F
Gas temp into load area: 150 deg F

The first issue I have is determining the final gas temperature as it leaves the load area to go into a heat exchanger. From this I will then need to size the heat-exchanger needed.

Can anyone recommend a solution to this problem.

Thank you

Are the pins in some sort of uniform orientation, or do the just get dumped on a tray or belt?

If they are random, its eems like a numerical solution for this would be a real bi*&$ to develop. Somewhat easier for uniform orientation. I suppose one of the higher-end CFD packages could deal with it, but it is a non-steatdy state problem. I'm not convinced that the CFD boys are quite there yet for transient analysis.

In either case, I'd think it would be much easier to do a few small-scale tests

Can you post a sketch of what you are talking about , cause really i'm having difficulty to deal with only written technical issues

The pins will be racked in a vertical position. The airflow will be turbulent coming from a 360 degree pattern towards the load.

only to the extent that any individual's browser can display the image. JPG and GIF are pretty safe for that.

However, the actual graphic file must be hosted elsewhere.
