Marine Grade Paint System

Hi there,

We have some mechnical equipment operating right on the edge of shipping berths. An intitial paint system specified was as follows:
- Abrasive blast to SA 2 1/2.
- First coat inorganic zinc silicate. 70 - 85 um DFT.
- Second coat high build epoxy. 100 - 125 um DFT.
- Third coat high build epoxy. 100 - 125 um DFT.

Our customer has indicated they would like a top coat to retain its finish as long as possible. I have been recomended a urethane top coat by our paint supplier to replace listed top coat of high build epoxy. To provide good UV prtection and gloss retention.

Does this seem a reasonable system?

The polyurethane topcoat is a good idea, as states, for UV resistance and gloss (which helps water repellancy). Depending upon the equipment, you might even add a silicone type wax.

Could I respectfully suggest that you change the specification to the following:
Blast to SA 2.5
Prime, 65 microns DFT of Zinc Rich Epoxy
Finish Coat of Polysiloxane Urethane to DFT 150 microns.
Total DFT of 215 microns.
The above will give superior Gloss Retention, Colour Stability and Corrosion Resistance than the system originally proposed. You will also save time and labour costs.

That sounds like a nice solution, do you know of any other resources from paint manufactures I might be able to find.
