Maine Deck Bracket

Has anyone ever spec'ed these? Not sure how they are dealing with the eccentricity. I pulled up the ESR report

and It is not clear to me how they are addressing it either. Seems like a disaster waiting to happen.

Seems obvious enough, the eccentricity is carried by the rim board and the rim board is restrained by the sheathing of the first floor. However, I agree that I don't like it as it puts the rim board into cross-grain tension.

Note 5.8 of the ESR; "Rim joists shall be constructed with continuous fastening and support in accordance with IBC Table 2304.9.1. Details to resist the effects of torsion in the rim joist shall be submitted to the code official."

Knowing how most decks are built in Maine (I live here) I'd be shocked if anyone ever questioned this bracket. "She's wicked rugged!"

Joking aside, I would take the through bolts in the rim board and bolt them to blocking between the I-joists and the rim board (similar to how masonry walls are anchored to roof framing for out-of-plane loads). Nail the blocking into the floor diaphragm sheathing and this avoids the rim board entirely and wouldn't cost much more.

I agree that is how it should be done. Maybe 10% of the time it would. Seems like JLC should have a PE vet their stories before publishing.
At some point it will be attached to a 1" OSB band and we will read about it in the news.
