Magnetic dial guage stand

Does anyone know how those magnetic dial guage stands work, the sort where you push a button or turn a knob to activate the magnetic force?

They come in a couple of types. In some to turn them off you shunt the field through the back of the stand. In others you create an air gap that reduces the field to almost nothing.
